My Fiction

NEWS!

Look for my flash fiction "Sweet Bite" at Every Day Fiction (www.everydayfiction.com) on Halloween!  I'm excited.  The editors gave the story some really nice compliments.

I'm also nervous.  After reading some comments about recent horror stories at EDF (some stories that were pretty tame in my opinion) I'm not sure that mine will go over too well.  Visit and give me a vote of confidence!

Learned the Denton Writers' League anthology should appeared first quarter next year.  I have two short stories in it:   "The Ball Pit" and "Another Typical Night"   Very excited about this one.  It is an actual book.  While I doubt it will hit the NYT bestsellers list, just holding a copy of a book that contains some of my work renews my faith that I have what it takes to be a published writer.

I keep plugging away - and mostly getting rejected - daily.  I adhere to the old saying that it takes just one editor to like my work to sell it.  Surely, he or she is out there somewhere.  Besides, I haven't written close to the one million words everyone says it takes to succeed.

2008 Achievements:

I finished two novels so far this year!

The first, Deep Blue Funk, is a 50,000-word Young Adult novel about a guardian angel trying to save a school bus full of kids from demons.  I think it is funny.  My beta readers thought it was funny.  The agents I queried apparently didn't have a sense of humor (or so I'd like to think).  I'm still shopping it.

The second, Attack of the Crystal Spiders, is a 20,000-word Middle Grade scifi novel.  Basically, a boy learns he has special powers (he can make real objects using only spoken words) and saves his city from an invasion by giant insects.  My youngest son, Jacob, helped me to write every chapter (he'll make one heck of an editor some day).  I think the book is good, clean fun for boys with lots of adventure.  I have not tried pitching this one yet, since I'm now on the third rewrite.

Best Money I Spent in 2008:

Taking a synopsis writing class from www.writeruniv.com taught by Laurie Schnebly Campbell.  If you get the chance, take a course from Laurie.  I've never had a better teacher, writing or otherwise.

Worst money i spent in 2008:

The Authors and Editors Conference sponsored by the Writers' League of Texas in Austin.  What a complete waste of my time and money.  Sure, I met several agents (many of whom requested to see my work), but otherwise, the conference did not live up to the hype.  The hotel was overpriced, the breakout sessions boring, the WLT staff members rude, and the event poorly organized.  Rating:  Minus Five Stars.  You can spend your money more wisely at smaller conferences.

FREEBIES

I'm experimenting with different styles and genres.  Below are some stories that didn't sell but were good exercises in learning to become a better writer.  Enjoy!

And I appreciate feedback.  If you liked - or hated - a piece, email me at gkylewhite@yahoo.com and tell me why.  You won't hurt my feelings, but might help me improve.

  • "Murder U" was my first (and probably only) attempt to write a mystery.  I found it a difficult story to complete. uploads/MURDER_U_2007.rtf
  • "The Good Neighbor" was my first attempt at mirco fiction (only 150 words in this case).  If you think writing an entire story in so few words is easy, give it a try sometime.  It's harder than it looks.  The editors at AlienSkin liked this story, but passed because there was no speculative element.  uploads/The_Good_Neighbor.rtf

If you've read down this far, THANK YOU.  I am deeply honored you considered my words worthy of your time.  ~ Kyle
